Restylane and Juvederm are exciting new fillers that are composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that already exists in the human body and are used to provide volume and fullness to the skin.  These crystal clear gels are NASHA products; non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acids. NASHA is biodegradable and fully biocompatible with its human counterpart. Both agents are FDA approved.

Restylane and Juvederm can restore skin fullness to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds).  These fillers may last up to six months. Recently the areas treated have included the lips and the eyelid cheek junction (tear troughs). The longevity of the product in these areas is likely greater than six months and may last one year.  The stabilization of the chemical makeup of these fillers helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the material is nearly gone.

As with any procedure or injection in plastic surgery, risks and complications could occur.  Slight risk of allergy or reaction is possible, though not likely.  Skin testing is NOT required.  Transient redness and swelling may occur.  We will not inject in those pregnant, under 18  or lactating. Sunbathing and tanning are not advised.

Typical treatments are scheduled two or three times a year.  We recommend avoiding aspirin products, vitamin E and herbal products one week prior to injection.  Patients on any blood thinners or plavix/ coumadin must inform the doctor. Excessive bruising might result if these tips are ignored. Cold sore patients should discuss condition  with the doctor.
